On the road between Sedalia and Kansas City I saw my first ever Armadillo.
Unfortunately my first ever Armadillo was a dead one on the side of the road, but at least I saw one.
So I drove on towards Kansas City. I was excited to see the city, home to the Kansas City Chiefs and the future Mr. Taylor Swift but once again, like St. Louis, Route 50 was merged with the interstate routing around Kansas City so I saw very little of the city and none at all of the future Mr. Taylor Swift.
I’m disappointed that 50 routes around these cities and I know I could’ve just left 50 and headed through these cities but my goal in this east to west trip is to follow Route 50, so follow it I will.
Anyway, into Kansas.
Kansas on Route 50 is boring, windy, and flat. Or, if you prefer, flat, windy, and boring. And I mean this in a nice way- it’s reeeeeaaaalllly relaxing to drive Route 50 in Kansas. I was headed to Hutchinson Kansas to spend the night in the Sand Hills State Park and I just settled back and watched the flat landscape slide by. It was calming.
The woman who manages Sand Hill State Park might be one of the nicest people I’ve ever met. Not only did she check me in, she had me follow her in her golf cart so that I could see the available sites and pick the one I liked best. And then she showed me how to use the campground kiosk to pay for my stay and chose the least expensive choice for me.
$22 for the night.

I spent a lot of time in Kansas and Oklahoma for work. I know exactly where you are. You will have lots of quiet driving time ahead.
